- Description: Buffer, Later, Metricool, Hootsuite, and Sprout Social solve different jobs. Ranked by channel vs social-set vs brand vs seat meters, and what a $0 to $199 plan keeps after Free cliffs and profile caps.

Social media management software is not an [email list](https://www.bestfirms.org/best-email-marketing-software-2026). It is not an [AI caption stack](https://www.bestfirms.org/best-ai-marketing-tools-for-small-businesses).

It is a calendar, a queue, an inbox, and a bill that grows when you add a TikTok or a teammate. Buffer, Later, Metricool, Hootsuite, and Sprout Social are not the same product. One meters channels. One meters social sets, then posts per profile. One meters brands. Two meter seats, and the cheap seat still caps you at 10 accounts or 5 profiles.

Key Takeaways

- Rank by job, not a single best badge: cheap channel scheduler, visual IG/TikTok calendar, brand-metered analytics, incumbent seat, or premium inbox seat.
- The market splits five ways: Buffer, Later, Metricool, Hootsuite, Sprout Social.
- Stickers hide billing units. Buffer Essentials from $5/channel yearly; Later Starter $18.75 yearly; Metricool Starter $25 for 5 brands; Hootsuite Standard $99/user yearly; Sprout Standard $199/seat.
- A scheduled #ad is still an ad under the FTC Endorsement Guides. Platform branded-content toggles are not a safe harbor; knowing violations after a Notice of Penalty Offenses can reach $53,088 per violation (16 CFR 1.98).
- A caption generator is not a calendar. An AI marketing tool writes the line; this product queues it and bills the channel, set, brand, or seat.

## What a social media management platform is (and what it is not)

The product is a closed loop: draft, approve, schedule, publish, inbox, report. That is not [influencer marketing](https://www.bestfirms.org/b2b-influencer-marketing-the-creator-playbook-that-isn-t-instagram) (how you pay a creator).

Two jobs share the label:

- Publisher: queue, calendar, auto-post (Buffer, Later, Metricool, with different meters)
- Care suite: inbox, listening, approvals (Hootsuite, Sprout), billed per person

Buy the first for a 20-person care team and you rebuild the inbox. Buy the second for a founder posting three times a week and you pay a seat for a queue.

## How we ranked

Five checks, not a composite score:

- Job fit
- Published price (official pages on 4 September 2026; annual rates first)
- Billing meter
- Floor / cliff
- Real annual cost at that floor

## The ranking: 5 social platforms

| Tool | Type | Starting price | Best for | Main trap |

| Metricool | Brand-metered | Free (1 brand, 20 posts/mo); Starter $25/mo (up to 5 brands) or $45 (10); Advanced from $67 | Analytics + ads on one bill | Free has no LinkedIn and no X; approvals start on Advanced |
| Hootsuite | Seat-metered | Standard $99/user/mo billed annually (10 accounts); Professional $199; Advanced $399 | Teams already in Hootsuite | A second user doubles the bill; approvals are Advanced |
| Sprout Social | Seat-metered | Essentials $79/seat/mo annual ($99 monthly), 5 profiles; Standard $199; Professional $299 | Mid-market care teams | Standard is still 5 profiles; Listening is an add-on |

### 1\. Buffer

![Buffer publish composer and social scheduling product UI](https://storage.ghost.io/c/60/44/6044536b-c7e0-4ad2-8309-a715183828c1/content/images/2026/09/buffer-ui-2026.jpg)

#### About the tool

[**Buffer**](https://buffer.com/?ref=bestfirms.org) is the right buy when the job is a queue and a budget number, and you refuse to pay for a teammate who only comments. It meters channels, not seats, on Free and Essentials, then unlocks unlimited users on Team. It is the wrong buy as the 12-person care inbox. Best Firms treats it as the cheap channel-scheduler lane. Pricing was last updated November 2025 on the public page checked 4 September 2026.

#### Main features

- Channel-metered scheduling across major networks
- Ideas library and basic insights
- First-comment scheduling on paid Essentials
- Unlimited users and approval workflows on Team

#### Pricing

From [Buffer pricing](https://buffer.com/pricing?ref=bestfirms.org) (checked 4 September 2026):

- Free: $0 for 3 channels; 10 scheduled posts per channel (slot refills when a post publishes); 1 user; 100 ideas; 30 days of insights
- Essentials: from $6/mo per channel, or $5 billed yearly; unlimited scheduled posts; first-comment scheduling; still 1 user
- Per-channel rate: falls at 11, 26, and 51 channels
- Team: $12/mo, or $10 yearly; unlimited users and approval workflows
- Annual: saves about two months versus monthly

#### Pros

- Cheapest published channel meter for a founder queue
- Free is real if 3 channels and 10 posts each is the ceiling
- Team unlocks unlimited approvers without a seat tax

#### Cons

- A channel is one social account (five brands with Instagram plus Facebook is 10 channels, not 5)
- Upgrade from Free and the three free channels start billing
- Free also carries a lifetime limit of eight unique channel connections
- Essentials is not the team plan
- Facebook groups and Instagram personal profiles do not auto-publish
- "Unlimited" is a 5,000 posts per channel fair-use cap

### 2\. Later

![Later visual calendar and social content planning product UI](https://storage.ghost.io/c/60/44/6044536b-c7e0-4ad2-8309-a715183828c1/content/images/2026/09/later-ui-2026.jpg)

#### About the tool

[**Later**](https://later.com/?ref=bestfirms.org) is the right buy when the job is an Instagram grid, Reels, TikTok, and a Link in Bio, and 30 posts a profile is enough. It meters Social Sets first, then posts per profile, with inbox and approvals starting on Growth. It is the wrong buy as the B2B LinkedIn inbox. Best Firms ranks it as the visual IG/TikTok calendar lane. Starter cannot buy extra users, so a second human is a plan change.

#### Main features

- Visual calendar built for IG/TikTok grids
- Social Sets (one profile per supported network)
- Link in Bio
- Inbox and approvals from Growth upward

#### Pricing

From [Later pricing](https://later.com/pricing/?ref=bestfirms.org) (checked 4 September 2026):

- Starter: $18.75/mo billed yearly (monthly $25); 1 Social Set (8 profiles); 1 user; 30 posts per profile per month; 5 AI credits; Link in Bio; no inbox
- Growth: $37.50 yearly ($50 monthly); 2 sets / 16 profiles; 2 users; 180 posts/profile; inbox; approvals
- Extra sets: $11.25/mo yearly; extra users: $3.75
- Scale: $82.50 yearly ($110 monthly); 6 sets; 4 users; unlimited posts; listening
- Starter: cannot buy extra users

#### Pros

- Clearest visual calendar with a printed post ceiling
- Strong fit for IG/TikTok-first brands
- Growth unlocks inbox and approvals without jumping to Scale

#### Cons

- A Social Set is one of each network, not eight Instagrams
- Eight Instagram clients is eight sets
- Posts count when they are scheduled, not when they publish
- Inbox and approvals start on Growth
- AI: 1 credit = 3 ideas or 1 caption

### 3\. Metricool

![Metricool reporting dashboard and brand analytics product UI](https://storage.ghost.io/c/60/44/6044536b-c7e0-4ad2-8309-a715183828c1/content/images/2026/09/metricool-ui-2026.jpg)

#### About the tool

[**Metricool**](https://metricool.com/?ref=bestfirms.org) is the right buy when the job is a report the client will actually open, plus Facebook/Google/TikTok ads next to organic. It meters brands, which fits agencies that bill per client rather than per seat. It is the wrong buy if LinkedIn is the product and you stopped at Free. Best Firms treats it as the brand-metered analytics lane. Approvals and team roles start on Advanced, not Starter.

#### Main features

- Brand-metered workspaces (one brand = one profile per network)
- Organic scheduling plus ads reporting
- PDF/PPT client reports on paid plans
- Team roles and post approval on Advanced

#### Pricing

From [Metricool pricing](https://metricool.com/pricing/?ref=bestfirms.org) (checked 4 September 2026):

- Free: $0 for 1 brand; 20 posts a month; 30 days of analytics; no LinkedIn; no X
- Starter: $25/mo for up to 5 brands, or $45 for 10 (annual up to 24% off); unlimited scheduling (fair use); LinkedIn; PDF/PPT reports
- Advanced: from $67/mo for 15 brands; team roles and post approval
- X add-on: $10 per connected account per month

#### Pros

- Brand meter fits agencies that bill per client, not per seat
- Ads reporting sits next to organic on one bill
- Client PDF/PPT reports unlock on paid plans

#### Cons

- Free does not include LinkedIn or X
- A founder posting to LinkedIn is already on Starter
- Approvals are Advanced
- Each Google Business Profile is its own brand
- Hashtag tracking is $25 a day, not a plan feature

### 4\. Hootsuite

![Hootsuite social inbox and engagement product UI](https://storage.ghost.io/c/60/44/6044536b-c7e0-4ad2-8309-a715183828c1/content/images/2026/09/hootsuite-ui-2026.jpg)

#### About the tool

[**Hootsuite**](https://www.hootsuite.com/?ref=bestfirms.org) is the right buy when the team already knows the dashboard, a shared inbox is the job, and you will not add a lurker seat. Plans are sold per user, with account caps that rise by tier. It is the wrong buy if you think Standard at $99 is "social media management for the intern plus the CMO." Best Firms ranks it as the incumbent seat lane. Approvals and auto-routing sit on Advanced, not Standard or Professional.

#### Main features

- Per-user plans with a shared inbox
- Account caps that rise by tier
- Custom reports on Professional
- Content approvals and auto-routing on Advanced

#### Pricing

From [Hootsuite plans](https://www.hootsuite.com/plans?ref=bestfirms.org) (checked 4 September 2026):

- Standard: $99 per user per month billed annually; 10 social accounts; scheduling; one inbox
- Professional: $199; unlimited accounts; automated inbox; custom reports
- Advanced: $399; content approvals and auto-routing
- Enterprise: quote-only
- Trial: 14-day, no card; trial orgs cap at 10 to 20 posts a day and no bulk scheduling
- Monthly billing: exists; the month-to-month sticker is unpublished

#### Pros

- Familiar incumbent for teams that already live there
- Shared inbox is a real care-suite object
- Account caps rise clearly by tier

#### Cons

- Plans are sold per user
- Add a second person on Standard and the bill is $198 for the same 10 accounts
- Approvals are Advanced at $399 a seat, not Standard and not Professional
- A spend review that compares "$99 vs Buffer $6" without naming the unit is a fiction

### 5\. Sprout Social

![Sprout Social publishing and AI collaboration product UI](https://storage.ghost.io/c/60/44/6044536b-c7e0-4ad2-8309-a715183828c1/content/images/2026/09/sprout-ui-2026.jpg)

#### About the tool

[**Sprout Social**](https://sproutsocial.com/?ref=bestfirms.org) is the right buy when the catalog of work is replies, reviews, and a listening add-on the CMO will fund. It meters seats, then caps profiles until Professional. It is the wrong buy as a $0 newsletter host's cousin. Best Firms ranks it as the premium mid-market care seat. Essentials at $79 is a publishing SKU; the care suite starts in earnest on Standard.

#### Main features

- Smart Inbox and review management on Standard
- Profile caps that rise by tier
- AI credits per seat on Essentials
- Listening and Premium Analytics as add-ons

#### Pricing

From [Sprout Social pricing](https://sproutsocial.com/pricing/?ref=bestfirms.org) (checked 4 September 2026):

- Essentials: $79/seat/mo billed annually, or $99 monthly; 5 social profiles; reporting; 100 AI credits per seat
- Standard: $199; still 5 profiles; consolidated inbox; review management
- Professional: $299; unlimited profiles
- Advanced: $399; sentiment in the Smart Inbox
- Add-ons: Listening and Premium Analytics
- Trial: 30-day, no card; annual billing on the public cards

#### Pros

- Strongest published care-suite packaging for mid-market teams that will fund seats
- Smart Inbox and reviews are first-class on Standard
- Professional unlocks unlimited profiles

#### Cons

- $199 does not buy unlimited profiles
- Five is the Standard ceiling; unlimited starts at Professional $299 a seat
- Essentials at $79 is a publishing SKU
- A three-person care team on Standard is $7,164 a year before Listening

## Worked annual cost at published floors

Assumptions: U.S. company, annual billing where published. Metricool Starter uses the printed monthly $25 (annual "up to 24%" is not a dollar).

| Situation | Buffer | Later | Metricool | Hootsuite | Sprout |
| ------------------------------- | ----------------- | --------------------------- | ----------------------- | ---------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Solo, 3 channels | $0 (Free) | $225 (Starter) | $0 (Free) | $1,188 (Standard) | $948 (Essentials) |
| 5 channels, 1 user | $300 (Essentials) | $225 (Starter; 30-post cap) | $300 (Starter $25 x 12) | $1,188 | $2,388 (Standard) |
| 10 channels, 3 users, approvals | $1,200 (Team) | $495 (Growth + 1 user) | \~$804+ (Advanced) | $14,364 (Advanced x 3) | $7,164 (Standard x 3; 5 profiles) |

At 10 channels and three people who must approve, Buffer Team is $1,200 a year and Hootsuite Advanced is $14,364\. That is a meter gap, not a quality gap. Sprout Standard at the same headcount is $7,164 and still caps five profiles. Later Growth clears approvals at $495, then the Social Set math takes over.

## When it breaks

The billing unit is not the job:

- Buffer meters channels
- Later meters sets, then posts per profile
- Metricool meters brands
- Hootsuite and Sprout meter seats, then cap accounts (10) or profiles (5) until you climb a tier

A second human who only replies changes the plan. Buffer Essentials is one user; Team is the unlock. Later Starter cannot add seats. Hootsuite Standard doubles at the second seat. If the product is an inbox with three agents, you are not on a channel plan.

Agorapulse's public page does print a dollar: Standard is $79 a user a month billed annually ($99 monthly), 10 profiles, extra profiles $10 yearly. Another seat meter with a profile cap, next to Hootsuite Standard, not Buffer Essentials. Zoho Social's public page did not print a dollar in the HTML fetched on 4 September 2026.

FTC disclosure is not a branded-content toggle. A material connection must be hard to miss in the post, not the bio, not behind "more." #ad at the start works; #collab, #sp, and a thank-you do not. Each new post needs its own disclosure. Advertisers must train and monitor the people they pay; a scheduler does not contract the liability away.

## Best Firms' take

**Best Firms' take:** stop comparing "$6 vs $99 vs $199" as if those dollars buy the same object. **Buffer** sells a channel. **Later** sells a social set with a post cap. **Metricool** sells a brand. **Hootsuite** and **Sprout Social** sell a seat, then cap accounts or profiles until you climb. The team that buys Hootsuite Standard because "everyone uses it," then adds a second reply seat, just paid $198/mo for 10 accounts, while Buffer Team would bill about $100/mo yearly for the same 10 channels with unlimited approvers.

Named downside: if the job is a three-agent inbox with legal approvals, Buffer Essentials is the wrong lane and no channel discount fixes it. Fail the meter, change vendors. Do not negotiate a seat meter into a channel meter.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best social media management software in 2026?

There is not one. Buffer Essentials from $5 a channel billed yearly for a queue. Later Starter at $18.75 yearly for a visual calendar (Growth at $37.50 for inbox). Metricool Starter at $25 for five brands. Hootsuite Standard at $99 a seat under 10 accounts. Sprout Standard at $199 a seat when the job is the inbox.

### Does Hootsuite charge per social account or per user?

Per user. Official plans FAQ: sold per user (or seat). Standard includes 10 accounts for that seat; a second user is a second $99\. Buffer charges the account. Mixing those invoices is how a $6 channel becomes a $198 pair of seats.

### Is there a good free social media scheduler?

Buffer Free: 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts each, 1 user. Metricool Free: 1 brand, 20 posts, no LinkedIn, no X. Later's public floor is a 14-day trial. Hootsuite and Sprout trials are 14 and 30 days, not free plans.

## Closing

Monday move: open a one-page memo with four lines:

- The job (queue, visual calendar, brand reports, shared inbox, or listening)
- The billing unit you will accept
- The cliff that kills Free or Starter for your headcount
- Who must approve a paid #ad before it schedules

Price Buffer Essentials, Later Growth, Metricool Starter, and one seat plan at your channel/profile count, not the homepage starter. Then read the [FTC Endorsement Guides](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking?ref=bestfirms.org) against one live post. If disclosure fails, the scheduler is irrelevant.
